Na mutima

As we speak, I am sitting in my office. It is a typical day at Musana. Every couple of minutes, I am distracted from my work as I hear shuffling coming towards the open door. As the footsteps reach, I look up to see another woman and her three children passing by to see our social worker whose office is right next door. The kids are in tattered rags and no shoes, heads humbly bowed with their eyes gazing at their dirty feet dragging along. The women are always dressed in their best outing clothes- vibrant dresses that are fading from being washed too hard or their only non-ripped t-shirts that they found at the used clothing market. Their heads are wrapped in beautiful fabrics, which usually means they can’t afford braids. As our eyes meet, they smile, but through it, I recognize their exhaustion from the bags under their…
